About GospelShelf
Founded by an ordained pastor, husband of a Christian school teacher, and father of five, from little ones to young adults, with a shepherd’s heart for the Christian household.
“And these words … thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house.”Deuteronomy 6:6-7
A shepherd doesn't drive the flock from behind. He walks ahead, knows each sheep by name, and leads them to good pasture. GospelShelf began with that picture in mind: a quiet, trustworthy place where dads, moms, grandparents and children can find what will feed their faith at home.
God gave the first school of faith to the family. Long before classrooms and Sunday schools, He told parents to speak His Word at the table, on the road, at bedtime and at sunrise. Joshua said it plainly: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). Homes built on Scripture stand when storms come. Homes without it are built on sand.
Raising five children, from little ones to young adults, alongside a wife who teaches in a Christian school, has meant learning firsthand what helps a family grow in faith at every age: a bedtime prayer for a toddler, an honest answer for a teenager, a steady word for a young adult heading out the door.
So we gathered the best Christian books, devotionals and free resources we could find, sorted them by the real seasons of family life (newborns and teenagers, marriage and money, cancer, caring for aging parents, grief), and tagged them honestly by church tradition, so every family can choose what fits its confession.
Our prayer is simple: that through these pages a father opens the Bible with his children, a grandmother passes on a story of God's faithfulness, and a home becomes a place where Christ is known.
Where the books come from
Our catalog of 1592 titles combines a hand-picked starter list (publisher pages) with titles found through the Open Library catalog. To be included, a book had to carry a Christian subject heading, be in English, and be published by an established Christian publisher. Covers and bibliographic details come from Open Library. Every book page links to its source record.
How traditions are tagged
Tradition tags are assigned by publisher, not by reviewing each book. Examples: Concordia Publishing House and Northwestern Publishing House → Lutheran; Ignatius, Ave Maria, Our Sunday Visitor → Catholic; Crossway, P&R, Banner of Truth → Reformed; B&H/Broadman → Baptist; Abingdon, Upper Room → Methodist; Church Publishing → Anglican; Charisma → Pentecostal; Ancient Faith → Orthodox; Zondervan, Tyndale, Thomas Nelson, Moody, Baker and similar → Non-denominational/evangelical. A publisher tag is a starting point, not a doctrinal endorsement. Please check with your pastor.
Ratings & reviews
We never copy review text or invent ratings. Star ratings appear only when they come from a public API and are labeled with their source. Today that's Open Library ratings (289 titles have them). Google Books ratings will be added when our API access is available. For customer reviews, follow the links to Amazon, Christianbook, and Goodreads.
Summaries
Short summaries on each page are our own wording, based on the book's catalog details. Read the publisher's description before buying.
